Senior Geography Fieldtrip – Sharp Island and Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark
11 Jun 2025
On Saturday, 12 May 2025, a full-day field trip was organized for F5 Geography students to Sai Kung, focusing on the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark. The visit began at the Volcano Discovery Centre, where students gained a deeper understanding of volcanic eruptions and the formation of Hong Kong’s renowned hexagonal columnar joints. The centre featured informative models and rock samples, offering students an opportunity to explore geological concepts beyond the classroom setting.
Following the visit to the centre, students boarded a Kai To ferry to Sharp Island. There, they examined distinctive coastal features such as the tombolo and beach formations, and observed the famous Pineapple Bun Rock, a notable example of weathering processes. The field trip provided valuable exposure to local geological formations and cultural elements, allowing students to connect classroom theories with real-world applications. It was an enriching and memorable experience that enhanced their understanding of physical geography and encouraged a deeper appreciation for the natural environment.
